  4. Discuss and identify how those features are seen in your chosen piece.

  5. Share your research to the class in small group presentations

  6. Post your analysis to EverNote

  7. Add any terms that you came that you think are relevant to Rush, to the Coggle - we'll be referring to these techniques in the next lesson.

Minimalism and Techno influences

Refer to the techniques and features of Minimalist and Techno music that you researched.

What are some minimalist and techno features you see in Rush?

3 features:

There are 3 main features of minimalist and techno music seen in Rush:

  • Repetition: When material is repeated.

  • Repetition: When material is repeated.

  • Repetition: When material is repeated (get it?)

  • Cross Rhythms (aka Polyrhythms): 2 or more rhythmic groupings occurring simultaneously within the one time signature.

  • Moto Perpetuo: A fast instrumental passage made up of notes of equal length.

In EverNote, identify where these features are seen in Rush.

Cross Rhythms:

Here is an example of a cross rhythm from  Peter Sculthorpe's Morning Star I (Second Movement) for String Quartet.

Choose a part to play in an in-class performance.

How long are each of the rhythmic cells in each part?

Cross Rhythms mini-composition:

In groups of 3-4, compose 3-4 short syncopated rhythms of varying lengths, layered on top of each other.

Notate it using standard notation or otherwise, and perform it to the class.

Share it to your EverNote.
