Drum Basics

Drum Basics

Here are the parts of a drum.

We will be using the Bass Drum and Snare Drum in the Intro and Verse of Falling.

Reading Drum Notation

In drum notation, each drum has a different symbol.

We will be using the Bass Drum and Snare Drum only in the Intro and Verse of Falling.

Reading Grid Notation

X = Hit the drum

Empty = Don't Play

In this example, you would play the Bass drum on the 1st beat, then wait for the next bar to play on the 1st beat again.

Dynamics

Dynamics refers to how loud/soft to play.

This symbol tells you to start loud, then gradually get softer.

Break-down

Intro

There are two percussion patterns in the intro.

The first pattern is the bass, playing half-beats 1+2+3. This is played 3 times.

Think "I like ap-ple pie"

Remember to gradually get softer! (gradually use less strength when playing the bass drum). This makes it sound echo-y, like in the recording.

Break-Down
I                like .        ap -         ple .        pie

The second pattern is the bass, playing the same half-beat 1+2+3 "I like ap-ple pie", followed by three quarter-beats on the snare.

Think "I like ap-ple pie ve-ry much!"

I                like .        ap -         ple .        pie          ve - ry     much!
Verse

There is only one percussion pattern in the verse. The bass drum plays on the first beat of the bar.

Think "pie"
